At the Desert's Green Edge: An Ethnobotany of the Gila River Pima
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (November, 1997)
Authors: Amadeo M. Rea, Takashi Ijichi, and Gary Paul Nabhan
Average review score:

Much, much more than a book of FACTS.
Certainly this book is "about" the following: Pima Indians Ethnobotany Gila River Valley (N.M. and Ar Native American Anthropology Nature / Field Guide Books Science Botany Native American Studies - Tribes Plants...

...but it is really a glowing absorption of the essences of life as only those who still live in what's left of this earth's eden can truly and fully know. Rea perhaps brings this through to the reader better than any writer, poet, or other artist in history. This book is not just a "gem" or some other catchy adjective from the "How to Review a Book" manual--it is a true treasure, a legacy more valuable to the priceless "things" of life than all the dusty gold from King Tut's tomb. It is a ocean of pearls cast before the multitudes, hoping, perhaps, to snare a fertile, vigorous mind or two... You will laugh deeply. You will cry unrepentantly. You will revel in the invigorating joy of discovery. No matter who you are or how you make your way in this world, the spirit of this book will touch that secret something in you that you thought you would never find anywhere else...

Winner of prestigious Klinger Book Award
I just want to let people know that At the Desert's Green Edge was awarded the Klinger Book Award by the Society for Economic Botany. This is according to an announcement in the members' publication for the San Diego Natural History Museum, where Dr. Rea is a research associate.

The Primal Wound: A Transpersonal View of Trauma, Addiction, and Growth (Suny Series in the Philosophy of Psychology)
Published in Paperback by State Univ of New York Pr (April, 1997)
Authors: John Firman and Ann Gila
Average review score:

Ever person over 30 should read this book.......
If you have lived your life in the adult world for any period of time, it's time you read this book. Take a look at your emotions and relationships from a new perspective! This book gives us insight into why we behave the way we do, and then suggests ways to integrate ourselves into a broader perspective that allows us to change those things that are making us unhappy.

I sent this book to relatives in the US and abroad, and I know that it is providing us all with great information to help us heal our lives and move beyond real unhappiness and discontent.

It's a psychology book, and is not a quick read. But it makes a lot of sense and pushes you along. The references to other work are helpful and useful as well.

Good reading!

the most lucid book on the basic problem of being human
Jonh Firman's "The Primal Wound" (with help from partner Ann Gila), is definitely not just another self-help book. It is the book to read if you want to understand the deep dynamics of growing up and the wounds or the primal wound that you carry.Using the wonderfully post-Jungian model of Psychosynthesis, Firman details in clear and simple language the development of wounds and how they create a survival personality that is different from one's authentic personality. The book is a gem, full of ideas from amny sources. The integration of them will cause transpersonal theorists to take a closer look at what psychosythesis theory has to offer. This book shows that it has a lot to offer because it is integrative and synthesizing in nature. This dynamic is part of the structure of Psychosynthesis and Firman's book proves that we haven't heard the last of him. There is a wealth of material here and wisdom as powerful as it gets.

Gila Descending: A Southwestern Journey
Published in Paperback by High Lonesome Books (December, 1995)
Authors: M. H. Salmon and Fred Barraza
Average review score:

Salmon Ascending...as a fine writer
This is a story about guy crazy enough to load himself, a dog and an errant tom-cat into a canoe and paddle down the New Mexico's Gila River. A well-told tale that includes near-fatal upsets, suspense, hilarity and terrific insight into the characters that live around one of America's last truly wild rivers. A good read.

Easy to understand, really works
This book gives a good explanation of the different laws and was easy to read. I followed some of the advice and was able to prosecute my case without a lawyer. I obviously saved lots of money.

Venomous Reptiles of North America
Published in Hardcover by Smithsonian Institution Press (August, 1992)
Author: Carl H. Ernst
Average review score:

Comprehensive, technical guide to N.A.'s venomous reptiles
Thorough, organized guide to North America's venomous lizards, elapids, and vipers. Dr. Ernst provides, for each individual species, a detailed description & confusing species, karyotype, fossil record, distribution/range map, habitat information, typical behavior (including reproduction & feeding), predators/defense, and geographic variations. Additionally, he provides detailed information on each species' venom (toxicity, symptoms, antivenin information). At least one high-quality color photo for each species as well as several black & white prints. Overall, the book is technical enough for more advanced readers while still coherent to those less versed in the content area.

Effective Defense: The Woman, the Plan, the Gun
Published in Paperback by Police Bookshelf (April, 1994)
Author: Gila May-Hayes
Average review score:

Effective Defense a Winner
Gila May-Hayes is a well-known female firearms instructor with the Firearms Academy of Seattle, WA. This small but fisty shooter is also accomplished at defensive tactics. But what I really like is that the first 89 pages of her book concentrate on recognizing, avoiding and preventing being a victim of a crime, empty handed defense and use of less than lethal defensive tools. As a LFI graduate and firearms instructor, plus a personal defense instructor, I can recommend this wonderful paperback without reservation to women and men.

Effective Defense
Written by a woman for women who are considering their options for personal protection, both lethal and less than lethal. Clearly written for easy understanding of both techinical jargon and the overall concern a woman should have about her surroundings. Recommended reading for any woman who is concerned about her personal safety.

Gila Monsters Meet You at the Airport
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Byron Barton
Average review score:

Stereotypes
A young boy has to move out West and is worried that all the things he has heard about Western life are true.......

"Out West I'll look silly all the time. I'll have to wear chaps and spurs and a bandanna and a hat so big that nobody can find me underneath it. And I'll have to ride a horse to school every day and I don't know how."

Marjorie Weinman Sharmat deals with anxiety about change and stereotypes in a light and humorous manner along with Barton's earth tone illustrations. What a great way to help children learn about stereotyping. A subject that can do a lot of harm to our society if left to mature into an adult mind.

Although geared for a bit older children (5yrs. and up), all ages will get a kick out of following the young boy out West to see if gila monsters really do meet you at the airport!

A delightful children's book on moving to Arizona
"Gila Monsters" has to be one of my favorite children's books. It addresses the fear of a young boy from New York, whos "parents are moving out west." His friend told him that "Gila Monsters Meet You at the Airport," and he knows it's true, because he read it in a book.

When he finally arrives at the airport, he meets another young boy who is moving to New York and filled with fears, because there are alligators in the sewers. He knows it's true, because he read it in a book.

This book is a great way to defuse a child's fear of an upcoming move. And it's a fun read for adults as well!
